NATALIE in Action: How we’re Supporting European Regions with Nature-Based Solutions?

A whistle-stop tour of eight regions turning Nature-Based Solutions into reality.

From sun-baked coasts to cool Nordic fjords, NATALIE’s have moved from ideas to action. Grab your virtual backpack and follow our fast-track itinerary

1.Greece

When Nature Answers

Climate Risks

On Evia Island, a region where floods and forest fires could be severe, NATALIE’s journey begins.

The Greek team together with local stakeholders, jointly selected the ephemeral stream of Gerakari, a tributary of Lilas River in Lelantine Plain. This area was seriously affected by a devastating wildfire in summer 2024.

This nature-based solution aims to reduce flood risk, control erosion and support the enhancement of local biodiversity.

To reduce the risk of wildfires, a fire risk management plan was developed at the local level.
Prescribed burning will also be implemented in selected areas next year.

3.Latvia

A Drawn for the Future

In the Zemgale region, stakeholders and NATALIE partners worked hand-in-hand to shape a shared vision for the application of constructed wetlands as NBS to strengthen climate resilience in the region by 2050 through dynamic exchanges, group work, and co-creation exercises.

5.Belgium

Where we Dive Beneath
the Surface

In June, a major step was done in tIhe creation of our solution.

The first fieldwork was successfully carried out, including the drilling of the injection, extraction, and monitoring wells (186 meters deep). Initial tests show promising results, though further testing is planned in the coming weeks to assess the applicability of NBS.

7.Iceland

Where the Land
whispers Warnings

In the fjord of Reyðarfjörður, landslides and algal blooms send subtle but urgent signals.

Through systems-thinking workshops and financial dialogues, the community is crafting NBS solutions that respect the power and fragilityof their volcanic homeland.

These efforts aim to build resilience and turn natural challenges into opportunities for sustainable growth.
This
case illustrates how communities can harness nature-based solutions to live more safely and sustainably in a changing climate.

2.Romania

Where Wetlands Reclaim
the City

In Bucharest, nature is not only making a comeback, it is shaping the path toward a climate-resilient city. We are proud to contribute to the creation of a Blue-Green Corridor that begins in Văcărești Natural Park and weaves together rivers, parks, and communities, with citizens at its core.

Their shared mission: to restore local biodiversity and promote sustainable urban solutions. One such initiative is the restoration of lost reptiles and amphibian habitats through biofiltration systems that capture and filter rainwater collected from a nearby shopping center.

This is a powerful example of nature-based solutions in action: reviving biodiversity, engaging local communities, and building climate resilience, one shrub at a time.

4.Gran Canaria

When the Desert Meets
the Ocean

In sun-drenched Maspalomas,
co-creation continues to flourish.

Building on the workshop of the last Transformation Lab, local stakeholders and the Maspalomas team have designed two Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS): a filtering ditch and a bioretention system.

Their mission? Treat and store polluted runoff water.

6.France

Where Nature Finds
its way back

In May 2025, a significant milestone was reached, dedicated to improving aquatic system restoration and water management.

The first phase of restoration works has now been successfully completed.

The works carried out aimed to restore a more natural hydrological regime. Key actions included:

  • Emptying the artificial pond, directing its water through a settling basin to avoid sediment pollution downstream,
  • Rescuing fish populations
    and removing invasive species,
  • Breaching the dam to allow the natural watercourse to flow freely once again.

These interventions contribute to re-establishing natural processes, supporting biodiversity, and improving the ecological functioning of the river system.

8.Italy

Where we rewriting
the Rythm of the Canals

A network of water channels flow flows through the lower lands of the Veneto, region into the Lagoon of Venice.

Have you seen the drone?
It helps mapand monitor the river, keeping track of the benefits from the implemented river banks restoration and new techniques in vegetation maintenance.

The result?
Space for vegetation and biodiversity, and new NBS that keep the network efficient and reliable.

NATALIE Events

When NATALIE Reached the European Stage...
NATALIE & the Mission Implementation Platform for Adaptation to Cimate Change

Briefing Note

Improving collaboration and experience sharing of citizen and stakeholder engagement approaches for Climate Adaptation.

Under the MI4Adapt Working Group on Citizen and Stakeholder Engagement, NATALIE contributed to new briefing note gathering lessons learned accross EU projects.

At the core of NATALIE’s input: the Transformation Labs: a participatory approach that empowers communities, enhances resilience, and co-creates sustainable, locally tailored solutions.

The Big Picture

Resilience isn’t built for communities: it’s built with them.
A just transition begins when people are empowered to shape the solutions they need.

Insights on Monitoring
Climate Adaptation Activities

Under the MIP4Adapt Working Group on Monitoring and Evaluation, in collaboration with three Europrean projects ARSINOE_EU, IMPETUS, TransformAR, NATALIE co-authored a new report.
This collaboration identifies key insights from real-world adaptation efforts across Europe, offering guidance for future monitoring and evaluation strategies.

The Takeaway

Shared experience is our most powerful tool for better strategies, stronger communities, and more meaningful impact.

From Local Voices to European Action:
NATALIE at Three Key Climat events

Stop in Wrocław – Walking the Talk at
4th EU Mission Adaptation Forum
19–20 May 2025

In Wrocław, three NATALIE regions, Zemgale, the Canary Islands, and Nouvelle-Aquitaine, stood side by side at the 4th Mission Adaptation Forum. Their message was simple: local stories matter and together, they create something bigger. From early exchanges during the pre-forum to intense discussions on stage, the event was a true collaboration hub for Mission regions.

The Key Highlight

The unveiling of the NBS4EU Cluster poster, uniting NATALIE with sister projects ARCADIA, CARDIMED, DESIRMED, LAND4CLIMATE, MOUNTRESILIENCE and NBRACER, sharing strategies to advance NBS through policy, community engagement and regional action.

Stop in Rimini - Where Nature Met the Mediterranean at
ECCA2025 |16-18 June 2025

In Remini at ECCA 2025, Europe’s flagship climate adaptation conference, the NBS4EU Cluster showcased how NBS are shaping more resilient pathways across Europe.

In the standout session, “Nature-Based Solutions in Action: Scaling Resilience Pathways to Face Climate Extremes,” stories emerged: coastlines to deltas, mountains to Mediterranean cities, revealing how NBS are being implemented on the ground, scaled through finance, and embedded in policy frameworks.

The Main Message

When we finance nature,
we invest in resilience.
And when we act together,
NBS go further.

NATALIE also joined the MIP4Adapt working group on financing and in collaboration with 5 other EU projects, in the session: “Scaling Innovative Adaptation Finance Solutions.Together, they explored how to unlock investment, mobilise local action, and scale solutions beyond borders.
