N°14 - OCTOBER 2020

School is back in full swing and little by little our Association is getting back up to speed –  we have several activities planned for the autumn

The indomitable ringers hold out against covid

Despite the challenge of covid-19, the annual flamingo ringing took place this year as usual. A small team of volunteers ringed 327 chicks, thus maintaining continuity of data.

"Fragility", our new photo competition

With such a turbulant start to the year, the theme of fragility seemed an appropriate focus for the 2020 competition. So the theme your photos should reflect is Nature and her Fragility.

You can email your photos which should be between 1 and 10 MB (classic category) to amis@tourduvalat.org  or post them on Instagram at #fragilitetourduvalat.

Scientific monitoring: fishing and passerines

With the arrival of autumn, scientific monitoring will resume at Tour du Valat. Members of the association are invited to participate when appropriate.

On the menu is "fish" monitoring –  a fishing survey and identification of the species caught. They will doubless include sea bream fry, eels, shrimps and numerous other aquatic life.

Also on the menu is ringing (banding for those of you from across the pond) passerines (perching birds).  Over a few months, particularly in periods of migration, Tour du Valat ornithologists take particular interest in these birds. You can attend a morning ringing and learn more about these spectacular avian long-distance athletes.

Spotlight on water at the library in Arles

Once more the Friends of the Tour du Valat will join forces with the Arles media library this year.

This year's exhibition on “water in all its states”  will include numerous documents on the Rhône.

This double exhibition will be open from early November to mid-December. For more information go to the website of the library.

Feedback on the General Assembly

Our general assembly was on September 19 at Tour du Valat.  Some forty members experienced this day in the life of our Association. We began with the presentation of the President's report and financial statement. The board of directors saw 3 members re-elected while 3 new members were elected (we will introduce them soon). The morning ended with a group animation.

In the afternoon a few lucky ones of us watched geese, ducks and flamingos at the Saint Seren lagoon on Tour du Valat's estate.

Once upon a time in Tour du Valat

In the form of a seminar, Jacques Blondel told us of his experiences of some half a century ago at Tour du Valat when he was a CNRS researcher, and of life at Tour du Valat between 1959 and 1970, and of the beginnings of the ecology centre of CNRS, so short-lived …

Carole Leray

Carole completed a year of civic service* at Tour du Valat as part of the species team. Subsequently, she was recruited on a fixed-term contract to work on various team projects, including monitoring a colony of Eurasian Gulls and Eurasian Spoonbills.

*Civic service is a French device for encouraging commitment to citizenship. It offers young people aged 16 to 25 the possibility of committing for a period of 6 to 12 months in a mission of general interest.

When did you first come to Tour du Valat, and why ?

I arrived one Sunday evening in October 2016, to begin my civic service with Marion Vittecoq in the "species" department and more particularly in the "health ecology" and "ornithology" team.

What was your first impression ?

I had never been to the Camargue before and frankly after passing Le Sambuc I told myself that I was lost!  I ended up in the courtyard of the plane trees. I did not expect to see this very wooded place after all the fields and the ditches filled with reeds. I was greeted by the current residents of L'École [“The School”,  the building where research assitants often stay] and was really touched by their kindness and the good atmosphere that prevailed.

What is your favourite memory of Tour du Valat ?

A really difficult question  most of my memories of Tour du Valat are so incredible! I wouldn't choose just one, but rather a collection of memories. During my CDD I had the chance to follow the reproduction of the Eurasian Spoonbill to have the opportunity to observe the birds closely and watch the chicks growing up week by week was really super and beautiful! I was so lucky to be able to work for almost two years in these environments rich in biodiversity and to be able to follow all the species so closely.

What was your best meeting at Tour du Valat ?

There are several,  Tour du Valat is filled with amazing, welcoming and caring people. Nevertheless, Marion Vittecoq remains outstanding. She is an exceptional woman and researcher, I cannot thank her enough for all she has done for me! She sees the best in each of us, she is always motivated and smiling and she shares it all! Working with her has been a huge pleasure!

Which, for you, is the species most emblematic of the Camargue ?

Again it's hard to choose and I've already mentioned the White Spoonbills so I would say the Common Crane. It can be seen in many places but for me it represents the winter atmosphere of  Tour du Valat. Watching them fly just above you on the way home on winter evenings always makes me feel so good.

Why have you become a Friend of Tour du Valat ?

I joined the Association because my time at Tour du Valat was memorable and really important to me. I was so happy with the people I was able to meet and want to keep in touch and to stay informed of what is happening at Tour du Valat.

Do you have any advice or messages for others who might take a similar side-trip to Tour du Valat in their life?

Make the most of it! Tour du Valat is magical and enriching, so go out, observe, contemplate, study ... and above all, go with each technician or researcher on their different missions.
You should also talk to everybody at Tour du Valat, each person –  they all have tips, stories and anecdotes to share and that is what for me is part of the richness of Tour du Valat.

Animated films in defence of wetlands

A picture is worth a thousand words – once again, the students of  MoPA , the animated film school in Arles, have proved that it is possible to convey complex messages thanks to an overflowing imagination and talent for 3D animation and popularisation. You too can get involved and watch these videos of a few minutes to better understand the complexity of the living world. And above all, don't hesitate to spread them to those around you.
