Faced with global challenges, water management at basin level is needed throughout the world!

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to remind you that you are invited to participate in the next 10th World General Assembly of the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO) that will take place in Merida in Mexico from 1st to 4th June 2016, at the invitation of the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), the Mexican National Water Commission (CONAGUA), the Mexican Basin Councils and the North American Network of Basin Organizations (NANBO):

Centro de Convenciones Yucatán Siglo XXI
Calle 60 Norte, Número 299-E Ex Cordemex

I would like to tell you how much your presence in this event would be appreciated and the interest of all the participants in a short presentation of your experience in water resources management and your proposals for the future, especially regarding the large priority topics we have selected for this great opportunity with the goal of better water management at river basin level to face the major global challenges.

The World General Assembly of Merida will be organized around major strategic topics to ensure, in the basins of local, national or transboundary rivers, lakes and aquifers, the necessary implementation of measures for facing major global challenges that are essentially population growth, food and energy demand or adaption to the effects of climate change, which will be dealt with in four roundtables, to be held on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 June in plenary sessions and focusing on:

  • Adaptation to climate change in basins,
  • Mandates, composition, role and means of the Basin Councils and Committees,
  • Sustainable basin management: planning and funding,
  • The participation of the economic sectors and citizens.

The Assembly will also be an opportunity to present a first assessment of the implementation of the commitments of the « Paris Pact on water and adaptation to climate change in the basins of rivers, lakes and aquifers », already signed by 341 organizations from all over the world on the occasion of the COP21 in Paris in December 2015 and to define its operational prospects for the next COP22, to be held in Marrakech, Morocco, at the end of this year.

We will also organize a “Summit of the Institutions for Bi and Multilateral Cooperation”, in order to discuss with them about their vision of the adaptation programs to work out in the basins with their support to face the global challenges of water management.

There will be simultaneous translation into English, Spanish and French.

Prior registration to the World General Assembly of INBO is free of charge but compulsory.

The meeting is open to all Basin Organizations - INBO Members or Observers, and also to all the water Administrations, local Authorities, economic, academic and scientific sectors, as well as Non-Governmental Organizations, interested in Integrated Water Resources Management at the level of river basins over the world.

Any useful information, the program and proposed papers will be continuously available on the website:
www.inbo-news.org, as well as on the CONAGUA website:
www.conagua.gob.mx.

With a click here, http://www.inbo-news.org/inscription/inbo-2016.php, you can register directly on line. Please kindly fill the form quickly for the good organization of the meeting and for your best welcoming in Merida.

A technical visit will be organized on Saturday 4 June the whole day to allow you to discover the outstanding region of Yucatan with its water specificity (karstic system - Cenotes) - (Beware: departure will be early in the morning and return late in the evening).

The Members of INBO World Liaison Bureau and of the Committees of the Regional Networks are invited to a meeting on 1st June 2016 in the afternoon.

Depending of your prior commitments, I would advise you to arrive on Tuesday 31 May in the evening or Wednesday 1st June in the morning and, if your agenda allows it, to leave on Sunday 5 June 2016.

You will arrive at Merida international airport. Practical information on transportation to your hotel will be sent to you later on.

Merida enjoys a warm climate in June. This is a very interesting historic city founded in 1542, very calm, protected and beautifully restored. The state of Yucatan has also pre-Columbian archaeological sites of importance (Chichen Itza and Uxmal, on the UNESCO World Heritage list) and cultural, ecological sights (natural wells) and landscapes, as well as beautiful beaches (Cancun and the Maya Riviera), that would be worth a longer stay to discover them all.

Hotel booking at group discount price negotiated by our Mexican hosts, will have to be made directly by you at one of the selected hotels in Merida, the list of which and booking codes are available on INBO website: http://www.inbo-news.org/IMG/pdf/Hotel_Booking-2.pdf.

Our Mexican hosts will take charge of the shuttles and local travels in the Merida area, of the technical visit, together with lunches and dinners, from Wednesday 1st June evening to Friday 3 June noon included.

Unfortunately, INBO cannot take charge of your expenses, air travel and hotel accommodation.

Finally, I remind you that the nationals of several countries may need an entry visa to Mexico, and possibly an entry visa for the "European Schengen Area", (if you have to transit by a European airport) which must be obtained before your departure from your country.

You can contact us at inbo@inbo-news.org ou inbo.ga2016@inbo-news.org.

I am pleased to see you again in Merida, next June, and I remain.

Yours faithfully.
