Bio360 Expo 2022 - 30-31 March, Nantes
Bio360 Expo 2022 - 30-31 March - Focus Biochar

Biochar has been around for millennia and we need to be developing it a lot more - right now ! - if our story is to continue on for more millennia still (or even just a few hundreds of years).

The IPCC and many other scientific bodies indicate that we not only need to reduce our annual CO2 emissions drastically by 2050 to achieve net zero but we also need to draw down and sequester gigatonnes of carbon from the atmosphere via negative emission technologies (NETs) that capture CO2 and sequester it - (enter stage right) BIOCHAR !

Biochar is just one of the handful of such NETs and we are now at the beginnings of a ramping up of industrial scale biochar production, which is paramount if biochar is to become a mainstream tool in our arsenal to combat climate change.

Biochar’s an interesting story of chicken and egg going hand-in hand which can be seen as an expression of the urgency of our times. Today we see significant movement in both the upscaling of biochar production and in parallel, rather than in series, in the diversification of applications of biochar in agriculture and agronomy but also in evolving novel applications such as composites and polymers with applications across a plethora of industries.

The Bio360 Expo 2022 Biochar programme brings together expert international thinkers and doers from all the relevant disciplines to offer the opportunity of a comprehensive and inspiring biochar day.

9h45 - 11h55: Biochar - The road to scaling up

Pyrogenic Carbon Capture and Storage (PyCCS) is a key technology for limiting climate change. It enables the capture and sequestration of atmospheric carbon through the carbonisation of biomass.

PyCCS permits the recycling of practically all biogenic carbon (biomass), transferring it into a stable form and turning it into a valuable product (biochar) with an existing and fast-growing market.

In this session, you will learn about growth trends of the biochar market. In order to keep up current growth rates, scaling of the industry as a whole as well as of single actors in the field has to be ensured. The session will shed a light on how this scaling can be realised from the sourcing of input materials to the increase of systems in size as in numbers.

14h-15h: Biochar - Carbon credits workshop

The IPCC published two reports in 2018 and 2019 which identified the annual offset potential of biochar to be between ca. 1-2 billion tonnes of CO2, if the scaling-up of biochar were to meet its full potential on a global scale. This session looks into the evolving voluntary carbon markets with viewpoints from some of the existing operators/developers.

15h-17h: Traditional and novel applications panel

As the supply of biochar is rapidly growing, the search for new markets where the carbon is preserved over the long term has intensified. This panel will include presentations from academics and industry experts covering traditional and evolving applications for biochar including soil use in agriculture, remediation and urban uses as well as non-soil uses such as water filtration and use as a filler in building materials and other composites, serving a range of industries.
